    Alstonville

    Listing id: 42557

Alstonville is a small rural town on the far north coast of New South Wales, one hour south of the Gold Coast in Qld and 15 minutes inland from the seaside town of Ballina. Alstonville Junior Water Polo started out with only 28 members playing on a Friday morning between 7-8 am. Since those humble beginnings the club has expanded to as many as 230 juniors playing in both ends of the Alstonville Olympic Pool on Friday nights. Water polo could be described as the town’s cult sport with many juniors also playing in the Monday night senior competition. Ian Ford, the head coach, is supported by assistant coaches and a very enthusiastic group of parents. Alstonville has produced teams that have won state & national titles and numerous players who have gone on to represent at state and national levels. However, it should be emphasised that the club’s objective is to provide an enjoyable sporting and social experience for juniors and to encourage our young athletes to not only develop their skills and fitness and have fun but to also respect their opposition and play in the spirit of the game. Isn’t that what junior sport is all about?

Aquatic polo was originally played in the Balmain Swimming Pool (Corporation Baths, White Horse Point) in the early 1880’s.. Teams were comprised of 12 players and the referee stood at the end of the diving board, over the pool, with a white and blue flag. Goals were scored by placing the ball in a round lifebuoy. The Balmain club was prominent in the competitions held by the NSWASA and won the 1st Grade again in 1898/99, beating the Balmain “B” team 4 goals to 1.  Currently we play in the Sydney metropolitan competition in 6 grades in the men’s competition and 5 in the women’s. • NSW Water Polo Inc. —- Visited: 426 Times

    Sydney Olympic Park

    Listing id: 42555

Water polo is considered the most physically demanding of all team games, requiring top performers to cover up to three kilometres in the pool during the one hour it takes to complete a game. This exertion is quite apart from the physical contact, both above and below the surface of the water that players must endure. Despite this, water polo is almost totally devoid of injury from personal contact and generally speaking is played in the spirit demanded by the stringent rules.  A modified form of the game called Flippa Ball has taken off across Australia, allowing children under 10 to engage in regular participation otherwise not possible in the past. This can only encourage the next generation of water polo players.
