Can Liverpool complete a historic quadruple in 2022?

As we near the end of the 2021/22 football season in the English Premier League (EPL), Liverpool have history in their sights. With just seven games to play in the EPL, Liverpool currently sits in second place in the table, one point behind leaders Manchester City. The Premier League would be one part of a potentially historic quadruple, with Liverpool also chasing glory in the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League, to add to the League Cup they won earlier this year.

No team has ever won the four major trophies that the leading EPL sides compete for in one single season. The closest we have seen was Manchester United’s historic treble back in 1998/99. That season, United won the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League, missing out on the League Cup.

Liverpool, have, of course, completed their own treble in the past. In 2000/01, they won the FA Cup, League Cup and the UEFA Cup (now Europa League), however, with only a third-place finish in the Premier League that season, it still falls significantly behind United in terms of stature.

This season, however, there is the possibility of getting one over on their arch-rivals and with one leg of the four trophies already in the bag, there is a lot of anticipation around Anfield as we head into the final few weeks of the season.

Let’s take a closer look at what Liverpool needs to complete the quadruple.

Premier League

Perhaps the most important leg of the quadruple is the domestic title. After 30 years without winning the Premier League (or old First Division), Liverpool finally put that ghost to rest in 2019/20 by winning the Premier League.

This season, they once again go head to head with Manchester City to be crowned Premier League champions. City pipped Liverpool to the title in 2018/19 and then again in 2020/21 and as it stands, their fate is in their own hands this season. With seven games to go, if City win all their games, they will once again be crowned champions of England for the sixth time in their history.

Slip up, however, and Liverpool will hope to take advantage and at the same time draw level with United in terms of the number of top-flight titles won: 20.

Liverpool are enjoying a fine run of form. They have won four out of their last five games with the only blot on that record a 2-2 draw with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. They have some potentially tricky fixtures in the run-in, starting with Manchester United at home and also including a local derby away at struggling Everton and home games against top-four chasing Tottenham and Chelsea.

Champions League

Liverpool secured their passage to the Champions League semi-finals with a comfortable quarter-final victory against Benfica. After winning the first leg of the tie 3-1 in Benfica, they played a much-changed team for the return leg at Anfield which ended in a pulsating 3-3 draw, securing a 6-4 aggregate victory.

Liverpool were always in control of the tie and will now face Villareal in the semi-finals following their surprise victory against Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals.

Liverpool will go into the semi-final as strong favourites. They are 1.14 with Betway Sports to advance to the final with Villareal priced at 5.50.

In the other half of the draw, domestic rival Manchester City will face 13-time champions Real Madrid in a battle of the titans. That tie is much harder to call with Manchester City slight favourites with Betway at 1.36 and Real Madrid at 3.00.

FA Cup

Liverpool secured their place in the FA Cup final, once again getting the better of Manchester City with a fine 3-2 victory at Wembley Stadium. In truth, the result could have been more comfortable, with Liverpool leading 3-0 at halftime before City mounted a second-half comeback.

Despite the close scoreline, City’s second goal came in stoppage time and Liverpool never looked like throwing away the three-goal lead they had built in the first half.

In the other semi-final, Chelsea overcame a stubborn Crystal Palace, with two second-half goals leading to a 2-0 victory at Wembley.

Liverpool will now play Chelsea in a repeat of the League Cup Final played earlier this year. On that occasion, Liverpool won on penalties following a goalless draw after normal time and extra time.

The final, again hosted at Wembley Stadium, will be played on Saturday 14 May, a week before the Premier League season is due to wrap up.

If Liverpool are to claim a historic quadruple, they are going to need a lot of luck as they head into the final games of the season. With potentially 11 games to play, it is likely they will need to win all of them if they want to turn that quadruple dream into a reality.
